or at least it doesn't help as much as killing the critters before they can attack Yeah, it's not terribly difficult to do that (Comp items or putting points into LP can make it happen pretty quickly.), but from what I remember seeing on the wiki (and from what I played, which was pretty far in following a party guide) offense > defense, so being able to take 200 points of damage doesn't help much if you can't kill things quickly.
